Instead, it rehashes the plots of numerous World War II and/Western films in which a brave squadron, a Magnificent 7, prepares to sacrifice itself in the…
Concept artist David Levy was kind enough to share some of the concept art and designs he created for 2013’s ‘Ender’s Game’. The military science fiction action film is based on the novel of the same name by author Orson Scott Card. The film is written and directed by Gavin Hood, the film stars Asa Butterfield as Andrew “Ender” Wiggin, an unusually gifted child who is sent to an advanced military academy in outer space to prepare for a future alien invasion. Since Ender’s Game was published in 1985, author Orson Scott Card had been reluctant to license film rights…
Concept artist Andrew Leung was kind enough to share some of the concept art and designs he created for last years ‘Spiderman: Homecoming’. Following the November 2014 hacking of Sony’s computers, emails between Sony Pictures Entertainment Co-Chairman Amy Pascal and president Doug Belgrad were released, stating that Sony wanted Marvel Studios to produce a new trilogy of Spider-Man films while Sony retained “creative control, marketing, and distribution”. In February 2015, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios announced that they would release a new Spider-Man film, with Marvel maestro Kevin Feige and Pascal producing. The character would first appear in an earlier…
Concept artist David Levy was kind enough to share some of the concept art and designs he created for 2010’s ‘Tron Legacy’. Disney’s ‘TRON’ was a cutting-edge technological achievement in 1982, being the first movie to really take advantage of the pioneering computer effects. It was far from a financial or critical success but it did leave an impression nevertheless, achieving cult status and garnered a cult following. Its cult status probably influenced Disney to attempt to revive the franchise 28 years later. With two of the original film’s stars Bruce Boxleitner and Jeff Bridges, returning for ‘TRON: Legacy.’ TRON:…
Concept artist David Levy was kind enough to share some of the concept art and designs he created for Ridley Scott’s return to science fiction after 30-years, 2012’s ‘Prometheus’. Opinions really do differ on Prometheus and the film sparked a polarized reaction within the Alien fan community. I think I understand what Scott was trying to do, but cannot decide if it is well executed or not. Don’t get me wrong, the film is a return to the setting of Alien, in all its science fiction glory, it looks great and most importantly, it is something new. It is commendable…
Concept designer and visual effects artist Andrew Leung was kind enough to share some of the concept art and designs he created for Netflix’s military science fiction film, Spectral. Lasts year’s cool science-fiction action-adventure flick ‘Spectral’ was a small-screen feature with a big-screen feel. The film has beautiful cinematography with large, detailed sets, cool costumes, tech, and some nice CGI. The geopolitical forecast of a resurgent Russia in Eastern Europe leading to an insurgency is probably the least fictional aspect of the film. Somewhat akin to Aliens, it’s a genre we seldom see, military science fiction, filled with a lot…
Joel Kramer, stunt double for Arnold Schwarzenegger recalls: “Robert Patrick wasn’t James Cameron’s first pick – Billy Idol was.” When he originally looked at Cameron’s storyboards for Terminator 2, Kramer was taken aback. “I was like, ‘Jim, these storyboards look just like Billy Idol!’ And he was like, ‘Yeah, he was my first pick.’” In the end, Robert Patrick made an impression on Cameron during auditions as he got the job as one of the most iconic villains of all time. The rest is history. The 1991 film that also starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, and Edward Furlong went on…
Star Trek: The Motion Picture received mixed reviews from critics. Its final production cost ballooned to approximately $46 million and earned $139 million at the worldwide box office. It fell short of studio expectations, but enough for Paramount to propose a cheaper costing sequel. Roddenberry was forced out of creative control for the production of the film’s 1982 sequel, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. In Roddenberry’s place came Robert Sallin as the producer, and Harve Bennett as director. Bennet was the showrunner of The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman. With Paramount seeking to reduce spendings…
