Concept artist Andrew Leung was kind enough to share some of the concept art and designs he created for last years ‘Spiderman: Homecoming’.

Following the November 2014 hacking of Sony’s computers, emails between Sony Pictures Entertainment Co-Chairman Amy Pascal and president Doug Belgrad were released, stating that Sony wanted Marvel Studios to produce a new trilogy of Spider-Man films while Sony retained “creative control, marketing, and distribution”.

In February 2015, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios announced that they would release a new Spider-Man film, with Marvel maestro Kevin Feige and Pascal producing. The character would first appear in an earlier Marvel Cinematic Universe film, later revealed to be Captain America: Civil War. The suitable title of this 6th iteration of Spider-Man, as a reference to the common high school tradition homecoming, it is also the characters “coming home” to Marvel and the MCU.

On June 23, 2015, Marvel and Sony officially announced that Tom Holland would star as Spider-Man and that Jon Watts would direct the film. Specific comics that Watts noted as potential influences were Ultimate Spider-Man and Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane. In December, Oliver Scholl signed on to be the production designer for the film.

Watts wanted to heavily pre-visualize the film, especially its action sequences, as he does on all his films. For Homecoming, Watts worked with a team to “figure out the visual language for the action sequences and … try stuff out before” filming began to help Watts practice given his lack of experience working on large-scale films.

One of those artists involved was concept artist Andrew Leung, who together with other artists, created the MCU version of New York and the world we see in Spiderman: Homecoming.

It was an absolute pleasure working on Spiderman: Homecoming. I was thrilled to work with friends production designer Oliver Scholl, supervising art director Brad Ricker, and fellow concept artists Penrod Banks, Peter Rubin, Tani Kunitake, and Vicki Pui.
