Steven Spielberg taught us that the only thing scarier than a velociraptor is a velociraptor in enclosed spaces, like a kitchen.
One of the most iconic scenes in Jurassic Park (1993) features the two characters, Lex and her brother Tim, isolated in a kitchen hunted by two raptors. The scene follows the two siblings settling down together, they and the audience feel relieved – until the scene takes a sharp turn into pure terror. Discovering that they weren’t alone, the characters go into the kitchen to escape.
This scene is an iconic scene in Jurassic Park because of how it involves the audience. The cinematography is well synchronized. Throughout the scene there’s an eerie, non-diegetic sound, adding tension. The lighting in the kitchen makes a threatening appearance with a color scheme making setting feel ominous as it encases the siblings.
