The Battle of Coruscant was a battle that took place over Coruscant during the final days of the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems (CIS).

Prior to the attack, the Outer Rim Sieges had enmeshed Republic and Separatist warships and armies in vast battles in the spirals of the galaxy. As a result of this, most of the Republic’s Jedi were locked up in battles far away from the Core World. So also was the ships of the CIS and the Republic.

Despite this, General Grievous and Count Dooku managed to reach Coruscant with a massive CIS fleet and proceeded to attack the Republic Navy vessels defending the planet.

In Legends, the CIS invaded Coruscant with thousands of ships and millions of droids. With 450 Venator-class Star Destroyers slugging it out with the invading CIS. Each carrying 420 starfighters, with a total of 189,000 Republic Starfighters fighting.

The numbers are somewhat more conservative in Star Wars canon, however, as seen in the scene from ‘Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith’ above. The scene is possibly the coolest opening sequence in any Star Wars movie, to date.

The sudden reveal (paired with the music) felt like tumbling off of a rollercoaster and into the battle. Great CGI and the scale of the battle is amazing. It might still be the biggest battle ever depicted on camera. The flight through the battle makes gives us the viewers a feel of the enormity of the battle and the stakes at play.

The battle sequence features a tremendous amount of movement and the unpredictable consequences of objects in orbit around a planet. Both under control and out of control. The John Williams score is amazing, it amplifies the battle and brings the sequence to even greater levels.

In the aftermath of the battle, the Separatist were dealt a crippling loss from Coruscant, with an entire third of the Separatist Armada lost and perhaps even worse than that was the loss of Dooku (Darth Tyranus), with Grievous became the Confederacy’s new leader.

Palpatine (Darth Sidious), meanwhile, successfully achieved his goal of converting Skywalker to the dark side and took the fallen Jedi Knight as his new apprentice, replacing Dooku. The Chancellor dubbed Skywalker as Darth Vader and executed Order 66, branding the Jedi as traitors and creating media that the Jedi were behind the war. With the Jedi Order destroyed, Palpatine transformed the Republic into the Galactic Empire.
