Nine episodes of ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ have aired thus far this season. The midseason finale aired yesterday with the show returning on January 7th. We thought it would be appropriate to highlight some of the art of the show.

The CBS and Netflix show follows the Star Trek tradition of naming series after the spaceship that most of the action takes place on. The new Star Trek series feels ‘different’, probably in the same way that The Next Generation felt when it once debuted in the late 80s, to the dismay of some diehard The Orginal Series fans.

TNG turned out to be a worthy successor to TOS and the show’s creator Gene Roddenberry vision of a post-war, post-capitalism, egalitarian humanity far in the future. With the United Federation of Planets touting its exalted principles of cosmopolitanism, tolerance, equality, peace, and so on.

Deep Space 9 debuted in 1993, a grittier, darker version of Star Trek than TNG, just as Voyager, facing off against the Borg and other delta quadrant hostiles. The short-lived Star Trek Enterprise aired in the wake of the September 11 attacks on the United States, and it can probably be argued that this fact had a strong influence on the show, with a whole season dedicated to the errant Xindi, determined in their attempt to destroy humanity

Star Trek Discovery feels more akin to the Kelvin Timeline (aka the J.J Abrams Movie Timeline) from an aesthetic viewpoint. With a higher production value than any of its previous versions of Star Trek for the small screen, Discovery looks good, and the effects of the show are far superior to any previous incarnation of Star Trek on TV, and really, it even rivals the big screen versions at times.

Whether you like the Star Trek Discovery or not, there is no denying the concept art of the show is beautiful.
